With time the skin around the eyes becomes thinner, more crepey and accentuates aging of the face, while other areas may still appear youthful and vibrant. This creates a tired or worn out look that is unappealing. Loss of muscle tone in the muscles around the eyes and downward migration of the fat pads around the eyes can accentuate this worn outlook. All of this is caused by a multitude of factors including genetics, sun exposure, and aging.
Two common conditions that are bothersome around the eyes are bags and festoons. While both cause puffiness around the eyes, the cause is very different. Eye bags occur due to fat protruding through the skin in the lower eyelid area. Festoons, on the other hand, occur a little lower, over the area of upper cheekbones. Eye bags can be masked by fillers if done carefully. Festoons, however, are more difficult to treat but microneedling or fractional CO2 with PRP can improve this condition.
Both fractional CO2 and microneedling create tiny micro wounds which stimulate improved blood flow, the influx of growth factors, and collagen production. This in return causes improved tissue integrity and tightening of the skin around the eyes.
PRP is a great add on option to fractional CO2 and microneedling. PRP will enhance the treatment results but providing a higher concentration of growth factors and cytokines. PRP is obtained by drawing the blood and removing all the components other than the platelets that are loaded with growth factors. The great thing about PRP is that it stimulates your own collagen and elastin production for gradual, natural improvement. Two to three treatments may be necessary to obtain desired results, but there is little to no downtime with PRP. In fact, it will speed healing time when used after microneedling or fractional CO2.
For best results, we recommend a series of 3 treatments about 6-8 weeks apart. The first treatment will include SkinPen microneedling or fractional CO2 with PRP, followed by topical as well as intradermal and subdermal injection of PRP. If needed, a small about of filler will be used to soften the contour around the eyes. The second and third treatments include the SkinPen microneedling with topical and injections of PRP. The change will be gradual, with final results can be seen within 6 to 8 weeks after each treatment.
