Biotin, identified as one of the B complex vitamins, helps keep skin, hair, nails, eyes, liver and the nervous system healthy. Many people consume biotin in their diet from foods such as egg yolks, nuts, nut butter, soybeans, whole grains, cauliflower, bananas and mushrooms; therefore biotin deficiencies are rare. However, there is mounting evidence that increasing your biotin intake strengthens hair and nails, improves the appearance of skin and helps regulate blood sugar in type 2 diabetics. Because biotin is a water-soluble vitamin, overdose is rare and extra biotin will simply be excreted in urine. Mild side effects of biotin include nausea and digestive issues. Overall, there are no known toxicities associated with biotin.
