What is a wrinkle? We certainly know that wrinkles are a product of aging and that they are most definitely unwelcome additions to our skin. Prevention and avoidance are among the top priorities for us. The mystery lies in exactly HOW we do that. We know that sun exposure plays a huge part but our dietary habits are to blame as well. Why do those things promote wrinkles and aging?
Our bodies are made up of proteins, with collagen being the strongest protein and the one we most often associate with our skin and how it looks. Collagen provides strength to our skin and elastin, another protein, provides the flexibility. The breakdown of these leads to wrinkles and sagging. The process by which they are broken down is the result of advanced glycation end products, aka AGE’s. This occurs when sugar molecules in our bodies attach themselves to the proteins, other sugars, and lipids in our cells. The results of this are increased free radical production and a hardening of the proteins (collagen and elastin). This drastically reduces the strength and flexibility which shows itself as wrinkling and sagging on the surface of our skin.
Glycation changes the biochemical properties and electrical charge of our cells. It inhibits communication with other proteins and diminishes natural enzyme activity, two key processes in the elimination of waste products and the production of new healthy cells. Thus, old collagen and elastin are not properly disposed of and new cells cannot be made effectively, leading to wrinkles and sagging. While glycation itself is a natural occurrence with aging, it is drastically sped by exposure to sunlight, increased sugar intake, and free radical promoting behaviors such as smoking and alcohol consumption. BOTTOM LINE – it does truly matter what we feed our bodies. We cannot manufacture great skin without the proper nutrients. Since skin is our largest organ and the one that protects all of our other organs, we should treat it like the miracle that it is and feed it well with plenty of fresh and colorful foods and a well-rounded intake of essential vitamins and minerals.
Lastly, we still need to protect and nourish our skin from the outside during the summer months. Be sure to give your skin plenty of antioxidant protection in addition to sunblock! So before heading out to the pool, the tennis courts, the golf course, or even your next-door neighbor’s barbeque, take a few minutes to treat your skin to a little pampering. A few minutes each day can have a huge effect on the health of your skin and will help avoid all those unwanted wrinkle.
As for all those summer get-togethers and last-minute barbeques, have fun while still being mindful of what you eat. Your skin is a reflection of what you eat. It will continue to tell the story over time, even if you forget!
