Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a very safe and effective injectable treatment for small to moderate leg veins. The injectable solution causes the vein walls to stick together and seal off. As a result, the vein fades within a few weeks.

Benefit One

Reduction of Varicose and Spider Veins

Sclerotherapy effectively reduces the appearance of varicose and spider veins. By injecting a solution directly into the affected veins, the veins collapse and eventually fade from view.

Benefit Two

Improved Cosmetic Appearance

By eliminating unsightly veins, sclerotherapy improves the cosmetic appearance of the legs, helping individuals regain confidence in wearing shorts or skirts.

Benefit Three

Non-Surgical Procedure

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure performed in an outpatient setting, typically requiring no anesthesia at all.

Benefit Four

Minimal Discomfort

Patients generally experience minimal discomfort during sclerotherapy, with most describing it as a mild tingling or cramping sensation at the injection site.

Benefit Five

Quick Recovery

There is minimal downtime associated with Sclerotherapy, allowing patients to resume normal daily activities immediately after treatment. Strenuous exercise and prolonged standing is restricted for a few days to a week after treatment.

Benefit Six

Long-Lasting Results

While multiple sessions may be required for optimal results, sclerotherapy provides long-lasting improvement in vein appearance, with treated veins generally not reappearing once they have faded.

Precare

  • Avoid aspirin or blood-thinning products (fish oil, vitamin E, ibuprofen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for 7-9 days before the procedure.
  • Bring a compression hose to your appointment.  You will need a 15-30 mm Hg compression garment.
  • Do not apply lotion to your legs on the day of the procedure.
  • Shower and thoroughly wash your legs with antibacterial soap prior to the procedure.

Postcare

  • Expect possible bruising for approximately one week after the procedure.
  • Leave compression stockings on 24 hours a day for the first day.  You may take them off to shower.
  • Wear the compression hose during the day as much as possible for 5-7 days following treatment. to help improve blood flow in the legs and to keep the treated vessels flattened.
  • Take a 30-60 minute walk shortly after the treatment but avoid strenuous exercise for 5 to 7 days after treatment.  Do not perform aerobic exercise such as jogging or ride a bicycle for a week.
  • Avoid hot baths or showers for a few days following procedure to avoid dilating veins.
  • It may take up to 8-12 weeks for treated veins to improve. The appearance immediately after treatment can often look worse than prior to treatment.
  • Avoid blood thinners (aspirin, fish oil, vitamin E, ibuprofen, etc.) for 3-4 days following the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat varicose and spider veins. It involves injecting a solution directly into the vein, causing it to collapse and eventually fade away.

Sclerotherapy is highly effective for treating varicose and spider veins. It can significantly reduce the appearance of veins, although multiple sessions may be needed for optimal results.

Results from Sclerotherapy are typically noticeable within a few weeks to a month after treatment. However, full results may take several months as the treated veins gradually fade.

The number of treatments needed depends on the size and number of veins being treated. Multiple sessions spaced several weeks apart are often required for optimal results.

There is minimal downtime after sclerotherapy. Patients can usually resume normal activities immediately after treatment, although strenuous exercise and sun exposure may need to be avoided temporarily.

Good candidates for Sclerotherapy are individuals with varicose or spider veins who are otherwise in good health. Pregnant women and those with certain medical conditions may not be suitable candidates.

Sclerotherapy treats existing veins but does not prevent new veins from developing. However, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and wearing compression stockings as recommended can help reduce the risk of new vein formation.
