Dermaplaning gently scrapes away dead cells and vellus hair (aka peach fuzz) from your skin’s surface. It creates a smoother texture and diminishes the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars.
- Avoid the use of Retin-A and Retinol like products for 1 week prior to treatment.
- Do not use any physical or chemical exfoliation products for at least 3 days after treatment.
How Dermaplaning Works
Dermaplaning is a precise, manual exfoliation technique that removes the top layer of dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (commonly known as peach fuzz) using a sterile, medical-grade surgical blade. This process gently scrapes the skin’s surface, revealing a brighter, smoother complexion and promoting cell turnover.
Unlike abrasive scrubs or at-home exfoliators, dermaplaning offers controlled exfoliation without harsh chemicals or downtime. By lifting away built-up debris and dead cells, it also helps skincare products penetrate more effectively, allowing for deeper hydration and nourishment after treatment. The procedure is safe, non-invasive, and typically takes about 30 minutes, making it a convenient option for glowing skin with zero recovery time.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is suitable for many skin types and concerns, especially if you’re seeking a non-chemical, non-invasive treatment that offers immediate results. You may be a great candidate if:
- Your skin feels rough, dull, or dry
- You struggle with uneven tone or fine lines
- You want to remove facial hair for smoother makeup application
- You have sensitive skin that doesn’t tolerate acids or abrasive treatments well
- You want a gentle refresh without downtime
However, dermaplaning may not be recommended if you have active acne, inflamed skin, eczema, or a current rosacea flare-up. At Essex MedSpa, we evaluate your skin before treatment to determine whether dermaplaning is appropriate or if another option may better meet your needs.
Pairing Dermaplaning with Other Treatments
One reason dermaplaning is so popular is that it pairs exceptionally well with other skin treatments. By removing the barrier of dead skin and peach fuzz, dermaplaning allows other treatments to work more efficiently. Many Essex MedSpa patients choose to combine dermaplaning with:
- DiamondGlow™ – for deep cleansing and infusion of active serums
- Chemical peels – for enhanced penetration of exfoliating ingredients
- Medical-grade facials – to leave your skin refreshed, hydrated, and glowing
Our aesthetic team can recommend a combination approach based on your skin type, timing, and overall goals. Whether you’re preparing for a special event or building a long-term skincare regimen, dermaplaning can be a strategic part of your routine.
How Often Should You Get Dermaplaning?
For most people, dermaplaning can be safely performed every 4 to 6 weeks. This timing aligns with your skin’s natural cell turnover cycle, which allows each treatment to reveal a fresh layer without over-exfoliating. If you’re incorporating dermaplaning into a broader treatment plan or pairing it with other services, we may adjust the frequency based on your skin’s response and needs.
Some patients enjoy scheduling dermaplaning monthly for a consistent glow and makeup-ready skin, while others may benefit from a seasonal approach to address texture changes throughout the year.
What Makes Dermaplaning Feel Different?
The instant smoothness you feel after dermaplaning isn’t just surface-level — it’s a textural shift you can literally feel the moment you touch your face. Unlike gritty scrubs or harsh exfoliants, this treatment leaves no residue, no irritation, and no guesswork. It’s clean, quiet, and satisfying in a way that surprises many first-time clients. Once you experience it, you’ll understand why so many make it a monthly must.

Frequently Asked Questions
Dermaplaning is a gentle, non-invasive form of manual exfoliation which leaves your skin silky smooth. It removes the outermost layer of the epidermis and the vellus hair, also known as peach fuzz, giving your skin a ”baby-like” appearance.
The surface of the skin is exfoliated by gently gliding a sterile surgical blade over the area. After treatment, topical products are applied to enhance hydration. Because the skin is well exfoliated, the penetration of products is improved.
It is recommended to have this treatment done about every 4 weeks which coincides with a normal skin cycle.
Dermaplaning is very safe. Rarely a small area of pin point bleeding may occur.
Dermaplaning does not result in thicker hair. There are two types of hair: vellus and terminal hair. vellus hair, when removed, will grow back to the same size and shape. The coarse hair is called terminal hair and will remain coarse when it grows back. Dermaplaning will remove both vellus and terminal hair but will not change the hair texture or thickness.
The skin may be slightly pink for a few days after treatment and light flaking is to be expected.
